FILM & media
Steve Benjamin’s career began in 2008 as a marine guide on the baited Tiger shark dives in the Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area, KwaZulu-Natal. His journey is driven by a profound desire to understand the ocean and its creatures. This passion, combined with his expertise in spearfishing, photography, and marine science, makes him a trusted guide for divers, photographers, videographers, and production crews worldwide.
Steve’s fascination with the ocean has led him to master the world-famous Sardine Run, where he has led annual expeditions since 2009. His intuitive understanding of this phenomenon allows him to find bait balls and observe unique marine behaviors, offering a rare glimpse into the ocean’s secrets.
He also brings considerable experience to underwater film shoots, where he works as a rebreather diver to assist top cinematographers. Recently, he supported Roger Horrocks and Angel Fitor on a Netflix production in Lake Tanganyika, helping to capture stunning footage safely.
Animal Ocean offers world-class support for cinematic productions, with boats equipped for Cineflex, Shotover, and GSS rigs, mounted on a custom-designed, stable stand to secure these high-end systems in any conditions.
Steve’s love for sharing the ocean is reflected in his dedication to providing unforgettable experiences, not only for filmmakers but also for high-profile clients. Over the years, he’s led private guided trips for celebrities and billionaires in Cape Town and abroad, including Ellie Goulding, Casey Neistat, and Gabe Newell. Seeing the joy and awe on his guests’ faces fuels Steve’s passion, driving him to share the beauty of the ocean with everyone.
