Sardine Run - Update

Right now, I’m sitting on a sand dune, the last embers of our end-of-trip bonfire glowing behind me. We built it together — all of us out here for the Sardine Run — and now everyone’s gathered around it. Some are dancing, some are lost in thought, and some are just quietly watching the flames stretch into the sky. Sparks rise and vanish into the Milky Way above.

There’s a kind of quiet that only comes after spending so much time in the sea. The tide has just receded, I can still hear the ocean, and Jonny Clegg is playing softly on the speaker. It’s a beautiful scene — one of those moments that reminds me this isn’t just about the wildlife or the ocean. It’s about the people we share it with.

They’ve come from Moscow, Siberia, Ireland, the UK, the U.S. — some only ever see the Wild Coast and Mdumbi Backpackers and fly home again. But they leave with something unforgettable. That’s what we try to build: something deeper than just a wildlife encounter. Something wild, raw, and meaningful. A week-long trip that leaves a lifelong imprint.

We come to this remote part of South Africa to give people a real experience — far from cities, far from comfort zones — and we do our best to make it feel seamless. But behind the scenes, it’s hours of preparation, gear maintenance, calls, logistics, training. And by the end, it all comes together. The team moves as one. Guests go from strangers to ocean-goers. Everyone finds their rhythm out here.

Some become masters of the ocean, some just let it wash over them. Either way, it becomes part of them — and part of us. What we create out here is hard to put into words or posts. You’ll catch glimpses of it in the Facebook photos, the videos, the updates. But there’s so much more happening beyond the digital.

This is real. And it’s something I’m deeply grateful for
